This linocut was made in 2021, a year that will stick with us in various ways because of the pandemic. 2021 was also the year of the cicada. Brood X emerged after a 17-year absence and as part of a species of periodical cicadas with the longest known insect life cycle. For me, this cicada is a symbol of the constancy of the life cycle at a time when the rhythms of our lives were thrown out of kilter.
Two blocks were use to make this image. First the circle was handprinted with the yellow, orange, red gradiant. When that first layer was dry, the cicada was handprinted over top.
